On leaving Buon Dormire in Italy, we had to move South to go round the bottom of Italy and then to Greece. On our way are a number of dormant and active volcanic islands, of course, we decided to visit and anchor at one of the bigger, active volcanoes – Stromboli!
Stromboli is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth, it has been erupting continuously since 1932. The first eruption started 200,000 years ago which formed the island that it is on. It is a stratovolcano and its name comes from a type of pizza that is rolled with all its ingredients coming out of it. (Thank you Tamara for all the info).
As we approached Stromboli we saw the most bewildering site, one side of the volcano was black so it was evident that the lava flowed on that side and on the opposite side there was greenery, trees and at the bottom lied a small village where about 400 inhabitants lived. Why people would live right underneath an erupting volcano is puzzling. We dropped anchor in the bay facing the village and spent the night there.
We could hear the rumbling of the volcano every few minutes! We had a plan! At 4am while the sky was still pitch black, we would wake up to move towards the erupting side of the volcano to see if we could see it in action. With sleepy eyes we looked up but nothing happened, as we were about to go down to make some tea, we heard rumbling and suddenly the top of the volcano turned a bright glowing red that spewed fire hundreds of meters into the air. Screaming with excitement, we couldn’t believe we had just seen a volcanic eruption. We waited a little longer but it seemed the show was over so we turned around to head to our new destination when once again the volcano gave us a spectacular performance, between the rumbling noise and the spewing of fire, it felt like a giant dragon unleashing its anger. We were so grateful that we were able to witness that but I was also happy to be moving away from it, its size and magnitude were intimidating!

Hi, what a remarkable family and what a life experience and fun for Hani, Tamara and Omar. Chapeau bas to you Sara and Anwar.. I love the writing and description. I hope you will collect them in some form to enjoy over the years.
So, I saw a world map with numbered squares. Does it mean you will travel all over? Or are you staying around the Mediterranean? Somehow I think the Mediterranean maybe too small for you 😊😊
Hii. Thanks for reading and for your comments. We’re not sure yet where we might go to in the future, for now we are in the Mediterranean which we like a lot and we’re gaining experience and learning from being here. We’re taking it one step at a time to make sure everyone on board is happy.
