A Blog for the Foodies

One of the perks of visiting other countries is tasting their food and eating fruits and vegetables in season.  Normally we have access to all sorts of fruits and vegetables throughout the year from various countries of the world which is great, but it also means that we eat them all year round.  The right way to eat fruits and vegetables is to eat them in season and we were able to do just that on this trip.

In Spain, we ate octopus, squid and fish.  In summer their juicy, squashed peaches, melons and watermelons were simply delicious. We stocked up on all kinds of olives, green, black and pitted ones. We were also gifted delicious extra virgin olive oil and raw honey from our friends at Roda de Barra Marina.

In France, the kids loved the fresh baguettes and croissants.  We also came across a jam store at St Paul De Vance, with shelf after shelf of jam jars, all freshly made. Anwar and the kids had all sorts of tasty Pizzas at the same restaurants his parents used to take him to when he was young, The best pizza was at La Pizza Cresi located in Cannes with a branch in Nice as well.  Of course, they all indulged at the different Ice Cream places located at almost every street we visited.  If you feel like having a meal with a lovely view, Gourdon is the place to visit.

In Corsica, we had a great meal with great ambiance at Maora Plage Restaurant.  There is a pier to tie your dingy to and their set up is right on the beach so going into the restaurant with sandy feet is no issue.

In Italy, we had lots of pizza and pasta.  The kids discovered gnocchi which they’d never tasted before The eggplant parmigiana was also a favorite, and we bought lots of Italian tomatoes: black, green, orange and red tomatoes!  Oh and gelato, in every corner and every street there was a gelato store with at least 10 flavors to choose from.  A must visit is Café Greco, apparently it is the oldest Café in the world, please try the Lemon Cake!!!  Positano, a stunning town on the Italian coast, is known for its lemons hence its shops sell all sorts of items with lemons on them from ceramics to kitchen utensils and towels. Their lemons are the biggest and juiciest we’ve ever had.

Greek food was a pleasant surprise with lot of dishes that we were familiar with and closer to our kind of food.  We had hummus, tahina, mutabbal, dolmas (stuffed vine leaves), souvlakis (kebabs), and lots of gyros.  Gyro is a wrap made of thick round bread and filled with either meat or chicken pieces with yogurt and sometimes onions and tomatoes. I think we had Gyros almost every day when on land, for either lunch or dinner.  Our favorite restaurants in Athens were a Kebab place called O-Thanasis in Mitropoleus and Codice Blu.  In Mikonos we loved the restaurant at Kensho Psarou Hotel.  It was $$$ but well worth it.  We also loved a small family restaurant in Lesvos called Martin’s Restaurant, try the homemade sponge lemon cake after your meal.

Turkey – here we indulged in eating meat! Kebabs, kofta and doner (similar to shawarma).  We didn’t eat much meat in Europe so it was such a pleasure to have access to meat in Turkey. We also had access to homegrown fruits like pomegranate that were as big as small melons. Our favorite restaurants were Nusr-et Burger in Istanbul and Tike in Yalova, at the Marina,
