Learning An Extreme Sport!

We stayed in El Gouna for over two months to attend to some business. El Gouna is a delightful, colorful town in Hurghada, Egypt. If you like the sea, water activities in a beautiful setting then El Gouna should be on your list of places to visit. Scuba diving, snorkeling, dolphin watching, kite surfing, wakeboarding, sailing and golfing are just some of the activities you can indulge in.

We stayed in El Gouna longer than we had initially intended due to some unforeseen circumstances but at the onset we had the intention to learn something new during our stay; we decided to learn how to kitesurf!
Kitesurfers make it look so easy and we’ve always marveled at how graceful the kites look when they’re flying high in the sky but we learned when we took our course that it’s not an easy sport. The course was 8 hours and we took it over 4 separate days. Anwar, Hani, and I (Sarah) signed up for the course. There was a lot of flying in the air, getting dragged by the kite and gulping tones of seawater!

Hani was up and looked like he’d been doing it for years by the end of the course! I managed to get on the board for a few meters before my kite plunged into the water so I need to work on kite control. Anwar took a few extra hours on top of his course and is now able to go back and forth confidently including upwind kiting which is the skill of coming back to the same spot you start at. The difference in progress can definitely be attributed to the age gap, Hani is 18 years old and we’re hmmm…… over 40. I only found out it was an extreme sport after we had started which made me wonder why I was taking on this sport now! Overall it was great to take on a new sport and one we hope to practice in the future on the boat.
